Council assures businesses that Covid-19 grant support is on the way

Friday 3 April 2020

Bridgend County Borough Council is assuring local businesses that Welsh Government Covid-19 business grants are on the way to eligible applicants.

The non-repayable business grants of £10,000 and £25,000 are being administered by the council and registrations are currently being processed, subject to eligibility checks.
Council leader, Councillor Huw David said: “We have received 775 applications to date, and have already begun processing payments of grant applications this week, which means that those first payments can start to be paid into applicant’s bank accounts next week.
“We have already awarded a total of £650,000 to applications which have been checked and processed.

“We would ask that you bear with us, our staff are working hard to get these applications processed as quickly as possible. All applications need to be checked and verified, especially if bank account details supplied by applicants differ from the ones we hold on record. We need to verify these details in order to prevent cases of fraud.

“You will receive a new business rates bill showing the amendment to your account along with a remittance advice confirming the payment has gone into your bank account.
“We are urging any eligible businesses to apply for these grants, using our online form. Unless applications are made and bank details, including a current bank statement are supplied the funds cannot be paid to you.”
Any company liable to pay business rates and occupy a business premises in Bridgend County Borough with a rateable value of £12,000 or less, or a retail, leisure or hospitality business with a rateable value of £12,001 to £51,000 is being encouraged to register for a business grant.
If you currently do not pay business rates as you benefit from Small Business Rates Relief, you are still eligible to register for the grants.

Information requested

The council is also seeking information from businesses in order to target the right business support. We would like to know what the council and others could be doing to support firms during this difficult time. An online form has been set up for companies to send in their responses, including gauging the current and likely effects of the Covid-19 outbreak on their business.

Businesses are encouraged to check the council’s Coronavirus (Covid-19) information page for regular updates, as well as, Business Wales, Welsh Government and UK Government websites.
